Hard skills and specific subject knowledge have always been the cornerstones of success in business. However, in recent years the importance of leadership and soft skills are coming to the forefront of priorities among the world’s leading companies.

To find out more about this question, CFA Association Russia partnered with EY Business Academy and held a business breakfast on June 20 focusing on emotional intelligence (EI).

Victoria Karyakina, a business consultant at Ernst & Young, had an engaging presentation and gave an insight into the importance of EI and how companies can have a better performance overall by investing into their employees’ soft skills.

The ability to manage one’s own emotions and the emotions of others is something that all successful business leaders have, the speaker said.

Increasingly, EI is becoming an important skill that recruiters are looking for. That is actually not surprising considering that a leader with high EI can motivate a team, boosting its performance by as much as 20 percent and increasing a work environment by 70 percent, Victoria said.

Victoria mentioned five components of EI – self awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills – and the more a person develops each of these areas the higher his or her EI is.

Similar to other knowledge, EI and soft skills require time and effort to master. However, with enough theoretical and practical training EI can be learned and there is proven evidence that it brings significant benefits in the long run.
