CFA Institute Research Challenge Kick-Off

A kick-off event for a local level of the global competition for university students, CFA Institute Research Challenge, was organised on November 22 by the CFA Association Russia at the premises of PricewaterhouseCoopers in Moscow.

Student teams of 12 universities from Chelyabinsk, Moscow, Nizhniy Novgorod and Novosibirsk registered to take part in the competition this year, compared to 8 teams last year.

3.      Higher School of Economics (Nizhny Novgorod)

4.      Lomonosov Moscow State University

5.      Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology

6.      Moscow State University of Economics, Statistics and Informatics

7.      New Economic School

8.      Novosibirsk State University of Economics and Management

9.      Plekhanov Russian Economic University

10.  Russian State Social University

11.  South Ural State University

12.  State University of the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation

These teams will research a company, write a report on it and then present their findings to a panel of experts.

This year, HMS Group, Russia’s largest pumps and hydraulic equipment producer, was chosen as a subject of research and announced to students at the kick-off event. Deputy Head of Investor Relations at HMS Group, Inna Kelekhsaeva, made a detailed company presentation to the participants and answered their numerous questions.

The event was attended by over 60 students, mentors and supervisors, who were welcomed by the leaders of the CFA community in Russia. Vladimir Tutkevich, Executive director of CFA Association Russia, officially opened the local competition emphasising that students should be ready to not only uphold the reputation of their own university, but to represent their country before the international community.

President of the CFA Association Russia, Richard Hainsworth, spoke about winning strategies and best approaches to a company research, while Neil Withers, who received his CFA Charter back in 1976, explained the CFA Institute’s global mission and the importance of the Code of Ethics both in the competition and in the investment industry as a whole.

Now each university team, guided by a mentor, needs to prepare a written report based on a deep analysis of all the publicly available information about HMS Group and submit it for evaluation by experts. On February 5, a Local Final will take place, where the teams will make a presentation of their report and answer questions by judges. A team winning the Local Final will go to the Regional Challenge in London on March 5, 2012, and with a bit of luck and a lot of hard work – to the Global Final in New York in April, 2012.
